A July Tradition That Brings Us Together
Each July, something extraordinary happens at the Barrington Public Library. Our usually quiet meeting rooms and hallways buzz with activity. Volunteers move box after box of carefully sorted donated books. Shoppers - some with lists, others simply browsing - fill bags with hidden treasures.

Children plop down to read while parents search for beach reads or old favorites. It’s more than a book sale. It’s the Big July Sale, and it’s one of the most important events of the year for our community.
Organized by the Friends of the Barrington Public Library, the Big July Sale isn’t just about clearing space or recycling books - it’s a major fundraiser that directly supports the heart of our town: the programs, events, and resources that make our library more than just a place to borrow books.
Funding the Magic of Library Programs
The Friends fund over 88% of the library’s programming through donations and proceeds from book sales like this one. That means the museum pass program, author talks, music performances, crafting nights, writing workshops, children’s story times, and educational lectures all happen because of the generosity of people who donate books, volunteer their time, and shop the sale.
The Book Giving Circle
Each book that finds a new home during the Big July Sale is a small act of community giving. It’s one neighbor helping another discover something new, solve a problem, or spark a dream. That’s the real magic of this sale. The money raised isn’t going to a distant corporate office - it stays right here, helping make our library a vibrant, welcoming place for everyone.
Community Gathering: Shared Stories, Shared Purpose
The Big Sale also gives people a reason to gather. Over the years, friendships have been forged in the sorting room and at the cashier table. Shoppers share memories of books they loved growing up. Volunteers of all ages come together with a shared mission to give back. Whether you're a long-time resident or new to town, participating in the sale - by donating, volunteering, or shopping - is one of the easiest and most meaningful ways to feel connected.
This is more than just a chance to find great books – it’s a reason to come together. People connect through shared stories, laughter, and a love of reading. Shoppers and volunteers of all ages unite around a common purpose: to give back to this community.
Where Pages and People Meet - No App Required!
In a world where so much is digital and distant, events like this remind us of the joy of being present with each other. The library itself is a space that brings people together - whether for learning, enjoyment, or simply a sense of belonging. The Big Sale is a celebration of that spirit, and it’s powered by the people who believe in what a public library can be.

When you support the Friends of the Barrington Public Library, you’re not just picking up your next great read. You’re helping write the next chapter of our library’s story – one full of curiosity, creativity, and community.
