Our Biggest Book Sale Ever - Every Dollar Goes to the Library
From the moment the sale began with our members-only event on July 10, through the public days of July 11–13, shoppers filled every corner of the library. A record-setting $10,612.39 was raised at this book sale. Every dollar raised will go directly to the Barrington Public Library to fund essential programs and services.
The Salem Auditorium was a storybook playground
The spirit of the Big July Book Sale was captured best in the Salem Auditorium. Overflowing with gently used books for babies, kids, and teens, this dedicated space became a hub of discovery, learning, and joy. Families browsed together, young readers plopped down to flip through a new find, and teachers scooped up classroom favorites to inspire their students. Knowledgeable volunteers and rows upon rows of colorful titles helped create an atmosphere where future readers could fall in love with books. Laughter echoed, recommendations were shared, and more than once, a child hugged a book like it was treasure. For many families, it wasn’t just a visit - it was a treasured family experience.
One volunteer’s quiet work creates lasting impact: Joan Doppke’s Dedication to Young Readers
The outstanding selection of children’s books at our Big Sales and in the Daily Sale is a direct result of Joan Doppke’s dedication. A longtime member of the Friends board, Joan works quietly and consistently behind the scenes—cleaning, sorting, organizing, and curating thousands of donated books with care. She is deeply
committed to sparking a lifelong love of reading in children. Because of her efforts, families, teachers, and young readers can count on finding a warm, welcoming space filled with books that inspire, entertain, and educate. Joan’s work is a gift to our community and to the next generation of readers.
Of course, the magic wasn’t confined to just one room. The Chase Gallery buzzed with energy throughout the sale. Tables were packed with adult fiction and nonfiction—everything from bestsellers and classics to cookbooks, travel guides, memoirs, and more. Shoppers browsed slowly, chatted about favorite authors, and
returned multiple times to see what new titles had been added. It was a space where curiosity thrived and conversations flowed, drawing in readers of all kinds. The gallery felt less like a sale and more like a community gathering—one where stories, smiles, and book recommendations were freely shared.
Powered by Volunteers
This year’s sale brought out the entire community. Over seventy volunteers donated their time to sort donations, set up tables, assist shoppers, and manage checkout. These dedicated individuals, many of whom return year after year, are the heartbeat of our efforts. A volunteer overheard someone say, “Yes, hello again—this is my third time back in three days, and yes, I brought more children. I’m so in love with this sale and adore each and every one of the volunteers for bringing such joy to so many people.”
The funds raised through the Big July Book Sale support more than 88% of the Barrington Public Library’s programming. From author talks and family events to museum passes and tech help, these programs enrich lives all year long. Every purchase made at the sale directly supports these offerings—and helps keep our
library thriving.
More Than a Sale — A Celebration of Stories
And yet, the greatest impact of the sale can’t be measured in dollars. It’s found in the connections made between neighbors, the stories shared between generations, and the spark of curiosity ignited in a young. reader’s eyes. The Salem Auditorium reminded us what we’re really here for: to build a love of reading that
starts young and lasts a lifetime.
❤️ Thank You for Making It Happen
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, and shopped—you made this sale a true success. Thanks to you, the tables were full, the smiles were wide, and our library is stronger than ever.
